Talya Brookman is a Sydney-based abstract painter. Raised between London, Los Angeles and Australia, her work is shaped by movement between places and by the ways landscape continues to influence us long after we have left it. Painting is a way of exploring these experiences, allowing ideas to develop gradually through the process of making.
Working primarily in oil, ink and natural mineral pigments on canvas, Brookman builds layered surfaces through gesture, wash and accumulation. Forms emerge, recede and reappear through repeated acts of construction and erasure, moving between abstraction and recognition. Rather than depicting a particular landscape, her paintings respond to its rhythms, structures and atmosphere through shifting fields of colour, texture and movement.
Her work draws on geological processes, fractal structures and recurring patterns in nature. These references are not intended as direct representations, but as underlying forms and rhythms that shape the paintings as they develop. The use of natural mineral pigments brings the material of the landscape into the work itself, while the layered surfaces hold a balance between density and openness, structure and fluidity.
Across her practice, Brookman is interested in how forms gather, dissolve and find coherence. Her paintings remain open-ended, allowing the image to shift between the familiar and the unknown.
