Talya Brookman is an abstract painter based in Sydney. Raised between London, Los Angeles and Australia, her practice is shaped by movement between places and a sensitivity to how landscape, memory and experience are internalised and carried.
Her paintings explore shifting psychological terrains where structure emerges through uncertainty. Working primarily in oil and ink on canvas, Brookman develops layered surfaces through gesture, wash and accumulation. Forms surface and dissolve, suspended between abstraction and recognition.
Drawing on fractal structures, geological rhythms and recurring patterns found in nature, her work seeks moments of coherence within continual change. Recent paintings have become increasingly concerned with atmosphere, light and immersion, balancing material density with openness and restraint.
Brookman studied at Pratt Institute in New York before returning to Sydney in 2009. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout Australia. In 2025, her painting Tether received the People's Choice Award at the Fisher’s Ghost Art Prize.
